A traditional Pub with History
The Ellwood family came to the King’s Arms in 1908. Alf Ellwood was the Landlord and also the Blacksmith. (One of his sons still drinks here occasionally.)
Mr. Scholfield came to collect rents at the King’s Arms twice a year, the first Tuesday after April 6th. and the first Tuesday after October 10th. He drove a four-in-hand, dropped off his wife at the school at 11-30a.m. where she took a lesson, while he went on to the King’s Arms. The first day he received the Cottagers’ rent. Young Roland Ellwood ushered them in by name. Even whilst he
was having his lunch they would come in ,but they were never offered a drink. Next day it was the Farmers’ turn. After that he went out to check repairs to be done, and saw the builder or the joiner about them. In 1914 when his son and coachman joined the Army, he drove a horse and trap.
Across the road to the King’s Arms is the Pinfold once used for penning stray animals, and later by Dick Nicholson for breaking in horses.
